The CKZN Bodyboarding Association held a Flowrider Fundraiser contest on Saturday, August 30th at the Wavehouse, Durban to raise funds for the CKZN Team to help with their travels to the South African Bodyboarding Champs. The Event went off well with a lot of riders coming out to support the event. The event was going to be run in a Jam session format in which means that all heats are run including the final for 20mins and the rider gets scored for his runs just like a surf/ bodyboard event would with a maximum of 10 rides. We had 4 Divisions : Pro Boogie, Amateur Boogie, Pro Stand-up & Amateur Stand-up.
Amateur stand-up was a Jam setted format went well for the guys as it was their first Wavehouse event so guys were shredding the wave and getting barrelled all day. Guys were killing it and showing who was on top form, but in the end it was Mitch Van Straaten who was showing his clean and solid moves and a very stylish Pop shuv-it which won him the heat and his maiden victory at Wavehouse.
The Pro stand-up was also the Jam session but this time instead of runs the riders opted for a best trick session in which their would be a Strapped winner & a Strapless winner. Matt Lammers, Former SA Champ wakeboarder won the Strapped best trick with a massive Whirly-Bird 900, whilst Clayton Barker, K-Swiss Team rider won the strapless division with a massive Back 180 big spin high above the lip of the D-Rex, now that's crazy.
The Amatuer Bodyboard division was a great turn of events for most of the riders on the SABA (South African Bodyboarding Association) Tour in which most of these riders have been on the wave but have very little experience on the D-Rex but still tried to go out there and perform their tricks and try & become the CKZNBA Amateur Champ. Rob Gray and Charles Pass were trading positions back and forth during the 20min Final but when the heat finished one was victorious and that went to Rob Gray, experienced big wave charger who rides waves all over the world and will be trying to dominate this year at the pipeline event in Hawaii later this year.
The much anticipated Pro Final was upon us and with the likes of Stephen Janssens, Brandon Herbst, Jonathan "Oros" Oliff (Big wave & IBA contender) & Billy Tennant (#2 Overall in the US Flowtour World Champs, 2007).
This Final was a 15min Pro Final and these guys were going for it and going big and hard. Oros and Stephen were throwing some big tricks down early in the heat and even Stephen threw such a big el'rollo that he snapped the core of his bodyboard in two..but it was Brandon Herbst, the Darkhorse who came from nowhere to throw some of the biggest things I have seen on the D-Rex and totally kill the final and Billy Tennant was doing his normal thing and throwing crazy big rolls, inverts, hubbs, frontflips & gorfs..Experience on the International stage does show. It was a crazy final but Billy buster came out and went all out throwing some of the biggest ARS's ever seen on the Durbanicus Rex. All riders were giving their best and giving the crowd just what they wanted to see.. and that was real hardcore action.
